YellowScan and Drone Rescue Systems (DRS) have announced a strategic collaboration designed to improve operational safety and mission reliability for UAV-based LiDAR applications.
The partnership brings together YellowScan’s lightweight LiDAR mapping solutions and DRS’ parachute recovery technology. While the two systems are not directly integrated, they serve as complementary technologies for operators using high-precision sensors in complex environments. The primary objective of the collaboration is to provide a safety layer that protects both the aircraft and its valuable payload, which is particularly critical when deploying high-end sensors.
According to the companies, the use of parachute systems is increasingly necessary to meet regulatory requirements for the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Specific category. This classification often requires robust risk mitigation strategies to gain flight permits.
Fabian Weinhandl, Head of Business Development, said, “DRS parachute recovery systems are never stand-alone products – they support drone operations by mitigating air and ground risks, obtaining flight permit for the Specific Category or protecting high-end payloads like YellowScan’s LiDAR sensors. Our shared customers are looking for operational safety, reliability, and compliance, and this partnership addresses all three.”
The synergy between these technologies is specifically targeted at missions involving Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) flights, operations over populated areas, and mapping projects near critical infrastructure such as powerlines, industrial zones, and roadways. By utilizing recovery systems, operators can expand their mission capabilities while minimizing the financial risk associated with equipment damage.
Both organizations emphasized that the advancement of the UAV industry relies on a robust ecosystem of airframes, payloads, and safety solutions rather than isolated devices.
The DRS team added, “Working together within an ecosystem of UAV, payload, and safety technology providers is essential. Through this partnership, we can ensure our customers operate more safely and efficiently, while advancing the overall reliability of UAV missions.”
The inclusion of Drone Rescue Systems into the YellowScan Partner Network marks a formal alignment between the two providers. By leveraging their respective networks, both companies intend to streamline the integration of safety and data collection for professional drone pilots.
“YellowScan represents synergies with DRS, and through this partnership both parties can profit from each other’s networks,” DRS concluded.
