Drone gimbals and mounts provide a method of easily and securely attaching cameras and other payloads to UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) and other unmanned platforms such as USVs (unmanned surface vehicles) and UGVs (unmanned ground vehicles). They may also be used for counter-UAS systems.

Gimbal mounts provide a stabilization system for drone cameras, allowing the payload to remain in the same position as the drone moves and also compensating for vibration to provide smooth, blur-free footage. This is achieved through the use of an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) that provides information to high-precision brushless or servo motors.

Gimbal stabilizers are typically constructed from lightweight materials such as carbon fiber or aluminum, in order to take up as little of the total payload weight as possible.

Payloads for Gimbal Stabilizers

While gimbals may be provided with integrated cameras as part of a complete package, they may also be provided as an empty mount, allowing users to attach compatible payloads of their choice to their unmanned vehicle. These payloads may include visible and thermal cameras, LiDAR scanners, multispectral sensors and laser rangefinders.

Gimbals may be designed with a quick-release functionality that allows them to be easily hot-swapped in the field. The gimbal body may include ports that provide power as well as connectivity such as COM, USB, CAN, auxiliary and audiovisual signals.

If commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) gimbals do not suit particular application requirements, many companies also create custom gimbal solutions that can be designed with particular drones and payloads in mind.

Drone gimbal stabilizers may be designed to attach to the bottom, top or front of the UAV. They may provide stabilization in two or three axes – a two-axis gimbal works for pitch and roll only, and a three-axis gimbal stabilizes roll, pitch and yaw. Gimbals will also have set angles through which they can rotate about each axis.
