Chess Dynamics has appointed Andy Smith as the company’s new Managing Director, bringing more than 25 years of experience in the defense sector.
While at Leonardo, Smith worked on Electronic Warfare and Surveillance systems for Eurofighter Typhoon and helicopter platforms, later serving as Vice President of Engineering and Vice President of Operations. He also led collaboration on governance, intellectual property, and system integration between the UK, Japan, and Italy as part of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).
Andy Smith said, “What drew me to Chess was the chance to work on complex technology with complex challenges. This is a company with innovative products and an impressive reputation, but just as importantly, it has a strong senior leadership team that is capable, committed and aligned on what it takes to succeed. The combination of strong products and strong people is what really made me want to be part of Chess.”
Smith continued, “One of the first things I heard on the production line was, “we don’t have challenges, we only create solutions. That mindset really reflects the determination and teamwork that runs through Chess.”
Looking ahead, Smith added, “Right now, our priority is operational delivery. That’s a great position to be in – we’re not fighting for orders; we’re focused on how we deliver them. For me, success in the first year is about stability: keeping what we’ve got and doing it more stably, while growing people, capability and the business. Ultimately, we do this so that our customers are better equipped to complete their missions,’ he stated.
Chess Dynamics believes that Smith’s experience in engineering, operations, and international collaboration will strengthen the business as it continues to grow and deliver solutions for its customers.
