Marine technology specialist RAD Propulsion has appointed experienced defense executive Chris Shepherd to lead the expansion of its defense business, effective 1 May 2026.
The appointment comes as defense customers increasingly seek low-signature, energy-efficient, and uncrewed maritime systems. Building on the company’s existing capabilities in high-performance electric propulsion and maritime autonomy, Shepherd will focus on extending RAD’s capabilities into the defense domain, expanding its involvement in UK defense programs, and developing strategic partnerships with prime contractors, SMEs, and autonomy providers.
Chris Shepherd stated, “RAD has already established itself as a leader in electric propulsion and maritime autonomy. The opportunity now is to apply that expertise to defense, where there is clear and growing demand for uncrewed, energy efficient systems. I’m excited to help scale RAD’s impact in this space and work with partners across the ecosystem to deliver meaningful capability.”
Shepherd brings extensive experience across the defense, aerospace, and autonomy sectors, having held senior roles at Thales, L3Harris, and MBDA, where he led complex programs across the maritime, land, and air domains. His track record includes leading business units, recovering challenging programs, and delivering critical capability into service at pace, including in operationally urgent environments.
More recently, he has led the rapid deployment of autonomous surface systems for defense customers and supported innovative operations for the UK and allied nations. He has also advised SMEs in the autonomy and maritime sectors, helping them scale, compete, and secure wins in demanding defense markets.
Dan Hook, CEO of RAD, commented, “Chris brings exactly the blend of strategic insight, delivery experience, and deep customer understanding that we need as we expand into defence. There is a clear shift underway towards electrification, modularity and open architectures in naval capability and RAD is well positioned to play a leading role. Chris’s appointment strengthens our ability to partner, scale and deliver at pace in this important market.”
Shepherd will attend Combined Naval Event 2026, where RAD will exhibit and launch a new defense-focused product line.
