Southampton-based marine electric propulsion specialist RAD Propulsion has partnered with marine services provider Williams Shipping to successfully complete a zero-emission vessel operations project supporting local civil engineering infrastructure in Southampton waters.
The initiative involved deploying an electric vessel to transport construction materials from quayside facilities to a site across one of the busiest commercial waterways in the UK. RAD Propulsion supplied its electric vessel technology and propulsion expertise, while Williams Shipping managed harbour authority liaison, marine operations, and on-water support services.
The deployment highlighted three distinct operational benefits for commercial port environments: total elimination of local air pollutants, a low acoustic signature that improves vessel safety and crew communication, and integrated autonomous capabilities. Developed as part of RAD Propulsion’s electric propulsion architecture, the advanced autonomous features enable remote piloting, lowering operational costs and crew workload.

The initiative allowed Williams Shipping to evaluate alternative fuel options for its port activities while fulfilling the material transport requirements of the construction assignment without producing local emissions.
