RIEGL, a leading innovator in 3D LiDAR technology, has unveiled new cutting-edge products at INTERGEO 2024 in Stuttgart, Germany.

The new RIEGL VUX-10025 UAV LiDAR sensor and the RiLOC-F IMU/GNSS solution are set to enhance the unmanned industry with their superior performance in wide-area terrain mapping and precise orientation for drones. This launch strengthens RIEGL’s position in the drone surveying market, catering to a wide range of applications in the unmanned aerial systems (UAS) space.

The RIEGL VUX-10025 is a lightweight UAV LiDAR sensor designed for efficient wide-area mapping. With an impressive field of view of 160 degrees and a pulse repetition rate of up to 1,500 kHz, it’s ideal for mapping complex terrains, including narrow canyons, with great precision.

Key Features

  • Wide Field of View: 160-degree coverage, ideal for terrain mapping.
  • High Pulse Repetition Rate: Up to 1,500 kHz, providing dense data collection.
  • Lightweight Design: Only 2.36 kg, making it suitable for drones and small crewed aircraft.
  • Flexible Integration: Available as a standalone sensor or integrated with IMU/GNSS systems and optional cameras.

For customer-specific system solutions by professional system integrators, a special OEM version of the RIEGL VUX-10025, which provides customer-specific interfaces and less weight, can be provided.

The VUX-10025 can achieve up to 1.3 million measurements per second with a scan speed of up to 200 lines per second, supporting flight altitudes of up to 360 m (1,200 feet). Its lightweight design ensures easy integration with drones, including multirotors, fixed-wing, and VTOL platforms.

The RiLOC-F system adds precise orientation and localization capabilities through its MEMS-based IMU and GNSS unit, which is fully integrated within RIEGL’s software workflow for seamless data processing.

RiLOC-F

High-Precision IMU/GNSS solution for VUX-series laser scanners

The RiLOC-F has also been launched at Intergeo. This fully integrated subsystem for localization and orientation follows on from the proven RiLOC-E product, which has already been met with great enthusiasm by the industry. RiLOC-F is designed to be directly attached to RIEGL VUX-series laser scanners and is an ideal solution for small-scale LiDAR surveying with drones.

RIEGl-RiLOC-F

The RIEGL RiLOC-F IMU/GNSS solution is available for the following two VUX-series laser scanners:

This turnkey solution fully integrates a high-precision Micro-Electromechanical System (MEMS) Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), a GNSS unit, and RIEGL-developed software, to provide a simplified user-friendly workflow.

Post-processing of both the trajectory and scan data is done fully within RIEGL’s RiPROCESS, eliminating the need for any 3rd party software, and resulting in precisely aligned and consistent point clouds. Completely enclosed within the housing, this entry-level and cost-effective solution is especially suited for applications with uncrewed platforms, like multirotor, fixed-wing, or VTOL drones.

Additionally, RIEGL has unveiled the VQ-1560 III-S dual-channel airborne LiDAR system and the VZ-4000i-25 long-range terrestrial scanner, reinforcing their portfolio for various airborne and terrestrial mapping applications.

RIEGL VQ-1560 III-S

Dual Channel Waveform Processing Airborne LiDAR Scanning System

RIEGL-VQ-1560III-S

The RIEGL VQ-1560 III-S is an advanced dual-channel airborne LiDAR scanner, capable of mapping large areas with superior point density. The VQ-1560 III-S is the latest successor in the proven RIEGL dual channel laser scanning system series, suitable for a wide field of applications in airborne mapping.

The well-established “cross-fire” scan pattern enables a forward and backward view to the edges of the swath and a nadir view in the middle of the swath resulting in best point distribution for optimum target sampling. High pulse repetition rates of up to 4.4 MHz allow for operational flying altitudes of up to 1,600 m AGL, or up to 3,900 m AGL at a pulse repetition rate of 560 kHz (all values given for 20% target reflectance).

A high-performance IMU/GNSS unit and one or two optional high resolution RGB/NIR cameras are seamlessly integrated in the compact and user-friendly designed housing.

The excellent scan pattern and its wide operational range make the instrument one of the most versatile airborne laser scanners on the market today. It is perfectly suited for any kind of application; from ultra-dense corridor mapping from low altitudes, over high-resolution city mapping with minimum shadowing effects in narrow street canyons, to large-scale wide area mapping at utmost efficiency of up to 1,130 km² per hour at a density of 4 points per square meter.
