EIZO Rugged Solutions has released the following article highlighting the use of NVIDIA’s Jetson AGX Orin technology in the company’s latest 3U VPX single-board computer (SBC), which is ideal for high-performance edge AI in challenging UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) and unmanned systems applications.
In recent years, the field of industrial automation has experienced significant advancements, with the integration of cutting-edge technologies enabling more efficient and intelligent systems. At COMPUTEX 2023, NVIDIA announced its latest compute module, the NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin Industrial, designed for high-performance edge AI in harsh environments. This new variant of the Jetson AGX Orin unlocks an even wider environment use case and is ideal for ruggedized applications.
The NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin features an NVIDIA Ampere GPU with 2048 CUDA cores and 64 Tensor Cores. The Jetson AGX Orin module features 12 Arm Cortex-A78AE CPUs specifically designed for high-performance embedded applications. In addition to the GPU, the Jetson AGX Orin SoM also features dedicated AI accelerators, including two NVDLA engines and two vision accelerators. These accelerators enable the efficient execution of deep learning models and other AI workloads.
The Jetson AGX Orin Industrial module delivers up to 248 TOPS of AI performance with power configurable between 15-75W. It is form-factor and pin-compatible with Jetson AGX Orin and gives you more than 8X the performance of Jetson AGX Xavier Industrial (the previously available Jetson Industrial module). The compact Jetson AGX Orin system-on-module (SOM) supports multiple concurrent AI application pipelines with an NVIDIA Ampere architecture GPU, next-generation deep learning and vision accelerators, high-speed I/O, and a unified memory architecture with high throughput. The new industrial variant of the Jetson AGX Orin module additionally comes with an extended temperature range, longer operating lifetime, and higher shock and vibration specifications, as well as support for error correction code (ECC) memory.
Industrial applications often involve the integration of multiple sensors, such as cameras, LiDAR, radar, and more. The Jetson AGX Orin supports a wide range of buses to ingest data, enabling streamlined integration of existing sources. This capability opens up possibilities for advanced perception, object detection, and tracking, improving safety, efficiency, and overall productivity in industrial applications.
The NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin Industrial represents a significant leap forward in industrial automation. With its powerful AI capabilities, rugged design, and multi-sensor compatibility, it empowers businesses to develop intelligent and efficient systems for a wide variety of industrial applications.
Specifically designed for extreme environments with extended temperature ranges, EIZO Rugged Solutions’ new 3U VPX single-board computer (SBC) leverages the power of the NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin Industrial module. The Condor AGX-IOX is a high-performance SOSA-aligned OpenVPX 3U form factor SBC card designed for both autonomous and embedded edge computing systems completing instantaneous data analysis and transfer, multi-sensor processing, encode/decode, and AI Inferencing.
The Condor AGX-IOX supports 64GB LPDDR5 system memory allowing up to 205 GB/s memory bandwidth shared between the Arm Cortex CPUs, NVIDIA Ampere GPU, and Accelerator Engines. Additionally, this solution supports advanced storage and networking capabilities, including 64GB eMMC internal storage and 10GbE (Gigabit Ethernet), and high-speed I/O such as USB 3.2, DisplayPort, and RS-232 Serial.
The Condor AGX-IOX can be deployed in high-performance embedded computing (HPEC) in perception and communication applications such as:
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Drones: These platforms require rugged computing systems to process data from various sensors such as cameras, infrared sensors, and LIDAR.
Ground-Based Sensor Systems: These sensor systems play a vital role in detecting and tracking safety issues, gathering intelligence, and securing perimeters.
Electronic Countermeasure Systems: These systems employ RF applications for tasks such as signal interception, analysis, and jamming. HPEC is required to process and analyze large amounts of RF data in real time, enabling effective electronic countermeasures.
Naval and Submarine Systems: Naval and submarine platforms require high-performance embedded computing for sensor applications and RF communications. These systems include sonar arrays, radar systems, and communication equipment that enable underwater object tracking and secure communication.
These examples demonstrate the importance of HPEC and the need for MIL-STD-810-tested hardware in rugged applications. MIL-STD components ensure the durability, reliability, and performance of the systems, enabling effective mission execution in challenging conditions. The Condor AGX-IOX 3U VPX card meets all the rigorous environmental demands and the powerful processing needs required for HPEC applications.
