The company’s silicon technology is in production at its in-house facility and is ready to be scaled up to 50 tons by the end of the decade (500 MWh battery storage capacity).

Silicon anode technology for lightweight high-capacity drone batteries

As the drone industry continues to grow, the demand for greater range, longer flight times and higher performance is on the rise, with a particular need for clean and sustainable electrification solutions. Typical Li-ion batteries, which use graphite as an active anode material, cannot keep up with this demand.

E-magy silicon anode technology

E-magy’s silicon-dominant anodes offer up to ten times the capacity and faster charging times, while reducing overall weight and production costs. The company has solved the swelling and breaking issues inherent in the charging of silicon through a unique manufacturing process that utilises a nanoporous structure with high mechanical stability.

The advantages of E-magy’s silicon anode material include:

  • Higher energy density – the company’s revolutionary technology enables the creation of Li-ion batteries that deliver 40% higher energy density (in Wh/kg) with faster charging
  • Negligible anode expansion – tests have shown a negligible pouch cell thickness variation of <5% after 100 cycles, with an 85% weight silicon anode
  • Environmentally-friendly – E-magy uses cheap metallurgical-grade silicon that is abundantly available and EU-sourced, and a highly efficient casting process with negligible scrappage and a low carbon footprint
  • Low-cost – the company’s production costs per kWh are on par with graphite, thanks to raw material availability and an efficient crystallisation process

E-magy drone battery offerings

e-magy drone cellE-magy is developing a 12 Ah pouch cell specifically designed for drone applications that is highly suited to the needs of multirotor drones as well as hybrid VTOL fixed-wing platforms.

The lightweight and compact battery solution has consistently achieved over 30 minutes of flight time for up to 186 flight cycles under robust test protocols. Thickness measurements show that cell swelling is contained to within 3.5%, when the battery is cycled for 280 hours at a C/2 rate.

The first iteration of the drone pouch cell is already in production, and the company expects an improved cell design to be ready in H1 2026.
