New Zealand Customs has announced the acquisition of three Oceanbotics SRV-8 Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to counter increasingly sophisticated maritime smuggling tactics.
This strategic investment marks a significant leap forward in securing the nation’s borders and disrupting illicit drug supply chains entering by sea. By deploying these submersibles, New Zealand Customs aligns its technological capabilities with key defense and border agencies in the region to foster seamless collaboration.
Paul Campbell, Customs Group Manager Maritime, “Operating the exact same ROV technology as the Australian Border Force and the Royal New Zealand Navy drastically improves cross-border interoperability.”
The Australian Border Force is already highly experienced with this specific technology. Their high-stakes efforts utilizing underwater tech to intercept drug smuggling in Sydney ports were notably featured on 60 Minutes Australia, proving that this cutting-edge equipment delivers tangible results in the field and effectively supports the vital work of port security sectors worldwide.
