The U.S. Army’s Capability Program Executive Aviation Project Manager for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems has selected five industry vendors, including Vantage Robotics, to advance to the Manufacturing Readiness Assessment phase of the Short Range Reconnaissance program following competitive flight demonstrations.
The selection follows a Call for Solutions released earlier this spring under the UAS Marketplace acquisition strategy seeking current small unmanned aircraft systems technology. Over a dozen systems met initial selection criteria based on paper responses, leading to flight demonstrations held at Clarke Range near Anniston, Alabama, at the end of June. Following the fly-off evaluations, the Product Office selected systems from Parrot Drones, Skydio, Inc., Skycutter, Teal Drones, and Vantage Robotics to assess manufacturing readiness.
Among the selected platforms is Vantage Robotics’ Vesper system, which underwent head-to-head evaluations assessing range, endurance, frequency agility, imaging, autonomy, portability, and ease of use. The platform represents seven years of development and refinement by Vantage Robotics, which expressed intent to deepen its partnership with the Army and deliver the system at scale to warfighters.

Platoon-level systems are part of the Army’s strategy to equip every echelon with scaled, persistent Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition capability. Acting as force multipliers, these small unmanned aircraft enable kinetic effects, support ground operations, enhance operational flexibility, and contribute to troop survivability. The evaluation and deployment of these technologies support broader Army transformation efforts by aligning personnel and tactics with new lethal technologies to amplify combat power.
“To ensure our formations have the best advantage on a constantly evolving battlefield, the Army and its industry partners must advance SUAS capability faster than ever before,” said Lt. Col. Mike Carroll, Product Manager for SUAS. “The combination of the UAS Marketplace contracting strategy, our vendors’ quick response to demand signal, and our Soldiers’ invaluable feedback ensure the Army is fielding the right capability at the right time.”
The SUAS Product Office uses a multi-vendor approach to drive competition and deliver commercial technology at the speed of relevance. The Army remains steadfast in its mission to provide Soldiers with essential equipment to support its transformational objectives.
