Custom fabricated sapphire windows that are ideally suited for protecting sensitive vision systems and sensors in hypersonic aircraft and weapon systems have been introduced by Meller Optics, Inc. of Providence, RI.

Meller Optics Introduces Flat Sapphire Windows for Hypersonic Aircraft & Weapons

Meller Flat Sapphire Windows feature Mohs 9 hardness, which is second only to diamond and can withstand temperatures up to 1,000ºC, pressures to 10,000 psi, and are chemically inert, impervious to water, and extremely abrasion resistant.

Ideal for protecting vision systems and sensors in hypersonic aircraft and weapon systems, these windows transmit from UV to IR.

Featuring surface finishes from 60-40 to 40-20 scratch-dig, flatness held to 0.5 fringes of HeNe, and parallelism from 20 to 2 arc/secs., depending upon configuration, Meller Flat Sapphire Windows can incorporate mounting profiles including multiple steps.

Manufactured to customer specification, sizes can range from 0.250” to 10” O.D. with varying wall thicknesses.
