Pelican Products, a developer of protective casing solutions for unmanned systems, outlines its collaboration with ANDE to create a transportable protective enclosure for a Mobile DNA Analyzer designed for field deployment. Read more >>
ANDE focuses on moving DNA analysis capabilities beyond the laboratory and into operational environments, enabling faster access to critical information. Recognizing that DNA evidence is typically collected in the field, the company designed an instrument that can be transported from scene to scene, including battlefields, crime scenes, and command stations.
To support this requirement, the Mobile DNA Analyzer incorporates a custom protective case solution from Pelican Products, designed to safeguard sensitive internal components during transport and use in demanding conditions.
Several design challenges emerged during development. The need to balance mobility with protection initially resulted in a case that was excessively large and difficult to maneuver, to the point where it could barely pass through a standard doorway. At the same time, the system required a high level of protection due to the sensitive nature of forensic DNA equipment. The analyzer needed to remain fully operational after transport, even when exposed to the extreme weather conditions encountered by U.S. military and law enforcement personnel.
To address these requirements, Pelican Products developed a custom case solution that balanced overall size and mobility with the level of protection needed to defend the equipment against shock, vibration, and environmental exposure.
A key change involved transitioning the interior protection system from foam to wire rope isolators. This adjustment allowed for a reduction in case size while improving performance against shock and vibration. In addition, the inclusion of a built-in transportation cart made the system far easier to transport.
