Calian examines how greater visibility into GNSS interference can help support resilient Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) in degraded or contested environments.
Complete signal loss is not the only concern. Spoofing and partial jamming can allow a receiver to retain signal lock while producing incorrect position or timing data, creating a failure mode that may be less immediately apparent than GNSS disappearing altogether.
Controlled Reception Pattern Antenna (CRPA) technology uses multiple antenna elements and real-time null steering to reduce the impact of jamming or interference. By dynamically steering nulls within the radiation pattern, it suppresses interference and supports reliable PNT in challenging RF environments.
Beyond interference mitigation, Calian’s systems can also provide information about the threat environment. Situational awareness messages sent via proprietary NMEA over RS232 or RS422 report jamming state, jammer direction and power level, providing operators with situational awareness of these threats.
The CR8894SXF+, for example, houses four antenna elements and can mitigate three jammers per band, for a total of six. Its serial interface also provides antenna state information and the estimated direction of a jamming or interference source.
Interference awareness can be complemented by filtering at the antenna level. Calian’s XF+ technology uses deep filtering to attenuate out-of-band signals between 400 MHz and 3000 MHz by approximately 80 dB or more. XF+ also supports cross-band isolation throughout the LNA chain. If the upper band is jammed, the lower bands can continue to provide usable signals.
Additionally, Calian’s marine filtering provides strong rejection of marine L-band interference sources including Iridium and Inmarsat signals from 1616 to 1660 MHz, for reliable performance in challenging maritime RF environments
