Review Display Systems (RDS) has engineered a fully industrialised, portable ground control station for a defense marine manufacturer’s new fleet of Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USV).
The system has integrated proprietary safety systems within a rugged, all-in-one PC platform capable of reliable operation in demanding marine and defence environments, supporting rapid development from concept through to scalable production.
Overcoming Complex Marine Challenges
The project required a single, portable unit that could balance high performance, extreme durability, and lightweight portability without compromising ruggedness. The system needed to support a large display, incorporate a high-performance single board computer, accommodate complex networking and communications requirements, and include interface devices rated for harsh environments.
Advanced Hardware Engineering
Using the customer’s proof-of-concept unit as a reference point, the company has upgraded all critical components to ensure long-term reliability. The design features a 21.5″ PCAP touchscreen for intuitive, high-visibility control, a high-performance single board computer (SBC) to support mission-critical applications, and a robust internal architecture to manage complex networking requirements.
To ensure resilience in marine environments, the architecture incorporates IP-rated HID devices alongside a high-quality military grade keyboard. Materials, thermal management, and mechanical design were carefully considered, utilizing a carbon fibre construction to reduce weight while maintaining structural strength. This compact, portable form factor has been optimized for maximum deployment flexibility without unnecessary size penalties.
Rapid Production and Market Impact
An iterative design approach enabled rapid refinement, ensuring the platform was optimized for manufacturability and scalability. Functional prototypes were delivered in under 12 weeks from the initial engagement, allowing a quick transition from prototype to production readiness.
This rapid deployment has enabled the customer to be first to market in a highly competitive vehicle class. The successful implementation has helped secure large-volume orders and positioned the manufacturer strongly within the defence marine sector, demonstrating expertise in delivering end-to-end hardware design and manufacturing solutions from early concept through to volume production.
