SwissDrones has developed advanced autonomous aerial systems designed to replace crewed helicopters for long-range, mission-critical operations.
Traditional aerial inspections of power lines and pipelines have historically relied on crewed aircraft, a method that produces approximately 11.74 kg of carbon dioxide per kilometer. SwissDrones has addressed the risks and high costs associated with these missions by engineering an uncrewed platform capable of carrying heavy professional payloads over significant distances.
Innovative Rotor Technology
The company has utilized a unique engineering philosophy to ensure operational stability and efficiency. “Our rotor system — a proprietary approach based on Anton Flettner’s intermeshing, counter-rotating double rotor principle reduces mechanical complexity as it does not require a tail rotor and enables higher payloads than conventional rotor systems which results in a payload-to-empty-weight ratio approaching 1:1. This is the kind of design choice that quietly determines whether a platform is a ‘toy’ or a ‘tool’.”
Beyond Visual Line of Sight Operations
The SwissDrones platform has enabled end-to-end, Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) infrastructure inspections at an enterprise scale. This integrated approach encompasses flight execution, data acquisition, and AI-enabled data processing. In Queensland, Australia, the company has successfully deployed a recurring commercial gas pipeline inspection service covering 550 kilometers. This operation has utilized uncrewed helicopters and aviation-grade flight operations to produce high-resolution digital twins with automated issue detection.
Economic and Environmental Impact
Transitioning from crewed helicopters to the SwissDrones platform has resulted in operational cost savings of more than 70 percent. Furthermore, the system has achieved carbon dioxide reductions of up to 95 percent depending on the specific mission profile. These efficiencies allow organizations to maintain constant aerial coverage without the steep financial and environmental burdens of traditional aviation.
Operational Credibility and Reliability
The company has established a culture centered on repeatability and safety rather than industry spectacle. “SwissDrones exists to replace crewed helicopter missions where risk, cost, and emissions limit what organizations can do. If we disappeared, the world would miss a platform and an operating model designed specifically for long-range BVLOS missions, built around a unique twin-rotor aircraft, enabling organizations to obtain aerial intelligence day and night in challenging conditions, at reduced operating cost, and minimal carbon impact.”
