Virtower LLC has successfully upgraded its sensor systems to incorporate Remote ID drone detection across its network of more than 500 airports.

This technological advancement allows the platform to identify and display Remote ID-equipped drones in real time, including the precise location of the drone operator. These drone detection capabilities allows for a high level of visibility, offering airport staff the actionable intelligence required for safety monitoring, incident response, and the enforcement of FAA airspace regulations. The upgrade specifically aligns with the Federal Aviation Administration’s Remote Identification rule (14 CFR Part 89), which mandates that most drones in U.S. airspace broadcast identification and location data.

“Integrating Remote ID detection into our sensor platform is a critical step forward in protecting airport operations from emerging drone-related risks,” said Les Goldsmith, President of Virtower LLC. “By providing both drone and operator location data, we’re enabling airport authorities to respond faster and with greater precision.”

The deployment is being prioritized based on operational complexity and traffic volume. Initial upgrades are focused on commercial service airports, towered general aviation facilities, and high-activity non-towered airports that manage over 100,000 annual operations. This phased approach ensures the technology is implemented where it can have the most significant impact on safety and airspace management.

The sensor platform is engineered for scalable deployment across diverse airport environments, offering real-time monitoring and data integration. This development addresses the growing demand for tools that provide comprehensive situational awareness of low-altitude airspace while ensuring compliance with evolving federal safety regulations.
