Xer Technologies has formed a strategic collaboration with Daedalean to enhance the safety and reliability of Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations for its hybrid-electric drone, the Xer X8.
The partnership integrates Daedalean’s vision-based traffic detection and avoidance system, Ailumina Vista, into the Xer X8 platform—marking a significant advancement in autonomous UAV navigation in shared airspace.
BVLOS operations represent one of the most promising frontiers for unmanned aerial systems, enabling long-range missions for infrastructure inspection, emergency response, and ISR. However, operating drones safely in low-altitude airspace—especially without direct visual oversight—poses major regulatory and technical challenges. Airspace awareness and collision avoidance are critical to unlocking the full potential of these operations.
Bas Gouverneur, CEO of Daedalean, said, “Being able to detect and avoid aerial traffic will be a game-changer for drones that operate beyond visual line of sight. Networks of unmanned aerial vehicles will be able to scale up. We will be able to reach those in need by piloted or unpiloted means. Whatever is faster. We will have options, trusting that all aircraft are capable of maintaining safe separation, avoiding obstacles, and communicating seamlessly with one another in real-time. This will enable efficient, reliable, and adaptive responses to emergencies, deliveries, or other critical operations, even in complex or congested airspace.”
Vision-Based Traffic Avoidance for Real-Time Safety
Daedalean’s Ailumina Vista system uses AI-powered machine vision to provide continuous situational awareness. With cameras mounted on the Xer X8 airframe, the system can:
- Detect and identify nearby manned and unmanned aircraft
- Execute autonomous avoidance maneuvers in real time
- Enhance operational safety for BVLOS flights in complex environments
A demonstration of the avoidance functionality is scheduled for later this year, as the companies aim to validate performance in dynamic flight conditions.
Although integrating new technologies into UAVs can be achieved relatively quickly, widespread adoption depends on regulatory trust and certification. Daedalean brings deep experience from manned aviation, where it has already pursued certification of its traffic detection systems. This background positions the company well to adapt its certified-grade technology for the emerging needs of unmanned aviation.
The Xer X8 is a heavy-duty hybrid-electric UAV designed to deliver extended endurance and robust performance under harsh environmental conditions. Its modular architecture supports a wide variety of high-grade sensor payloads, making it ideal for data-driven missions over remote or hazardous areas.
Key performance highlights:
- Flight endurance: Up to 2.5 hours with a 3kg payload.
- Hybrid propulsion: Combines electric efficiency with combustion reliability
- Environmental tolerance: Operates effectively in strong wind and adverse weather
- Payload flexibility: Supports advanced sensors including EO/IR, LiDAR, and gas detectors
- AI-powered analytics: Enables real-time data processing and actionable insights
Equipped with autonomous traffic detection and a rugged, long-range platform, the Xer X8 is suited for a broad range of critical BVLOS applications:
- Infrastructure inspection: Monitoring of power lines, pipelines, and energy assets
- Disaster response and emergency services: Rapid deployment in crisis zones
- Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR): Persistent aerial observation for defense and security
By combining proven avionics expertise with a purpose-built drone platform, the collaboration between Xer Technologies and Daedalean brings BVLOS drone operations closer to mainstream adoption.
