ARK Electronics provides advanced optical flow and distance sensing modules that deliver dependable navigation and positioning data for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) operating in environments where GNSS signals are unavailable or degraded.
Designed and manufactured in the USA, ARK’s NDAA-compliant systems supply accurate motion and altitude feedback, enabling stable flight control in confined or obstructed spaces.
Optical Flow Solutions
The ARK Flow optical flow sensor combines surface pattern analysis with an integrated time-of-flight (ToF) distance sensor to provide precise movement detection and altitude measurement. This configuration allows unmanned systems to maintain position and flight stability in GNSS-denied locations such as tunnels, industrial interiors, and dense urban environments.
Supporting PX4 open-source firmware, the ARK Flow enables firmware updates via DroneCAN and includes ROS2 compatibility for flexible integration.
The ARK Flow MR builds upon the standard configuration with an upgraded ToF distance sensor capable of measuring up to 50 meters, extending altitude sensing range while adding only 5 grams to the system weight. Both optical flow variants are available as compact drop-in modules designed to support consistent and reliable flight control in challenging operating conditions.
Distance Sensing Modules
Complementing the optical flow systems, ARK’s distance sensor modules deliver accurate range measurement and obstacle detection in compact, low-SWaP configurations. Available in short-range and mid-range models, these modules integrate Broadcom ToF sensors with onboard laser sources and optics, maintaining reliable performance in ambient lighting up to 200k lux.
Each module supports DroneCAN and MAVLink communication protocols, UAVCAN firmware updating, and ROS2 integration. Standard Pixhawk connectors are included for CAN, UART, and Debug interfaces, with CAN and UART cables supplied.
The ARK DIST SR utilizes the Broadcom AFBR-S50LV85D ToF sensor, offering a typical range of up to 30 meters. Its integrated 850 nm laser operates within a 2° x 2° transmitter beam, and health monitoring is supported through a dedicated reference pixel for consistent output.
The ARK DIST MR extends measurement capability to approximately 50 meters using the Broadcom AFBR-S50LX85D ToF sensor. Compact at 2.8 x 2 x 1.4 cm and weighing 4 grams, the module draws a typical current of 78 mA (84 mA maximum) and includes LED indicators for status monitoring during operation.
Both distance sensor models are designed for efficient operation, drawing less than 84 mA at 5V, while maintaining the low size and weight required for integration into professional UAV systems.
Looking Ahead
ARK Electronics continues to expand its sensor portfolio, with an enhanced range model scheduled for release within the next three months. Further performance upgrades, including longer-range variants, are expected in 2026, extending the company’s established range of precision sensing solutions for advanced unmanned platforms.
