The Joint Navigation Conference (JNC 2027) will bring together the U.S. military, government and industry to discuss developments in positioning, navigation and timing (PNT). Hosted by the Military Division of the Institute of Navigation, the conference includes joint service and government participation and is intended for the U.S. military and Department of Homeland Security.
The 2027 theme is “Robust, Resilient, Assured PNT for Warfighters and Homeland Security.” The event will focus on technical advances in PNT, including the joint development, testing, integration and support of resilient PNT systems.
From an operational perspective, JNC 2027 will address advances in military GPS applications, the strengths and weaknesses of field navigation devices, warfighter PNT requirements and solutions, and navigation warfare.
JNC is described as the largest U.S. military PNT conference of the year. Its DTS conference ID is N20150610734.
JNC 2027 will take place June 7–10, 2027, with the exhibit hall scheduled to open on June 8 and 9. A classified session will also take place at AFIT, WPAFB.
The conference will focus on technical advances in PNT, with particular attention given to joint development and testing, resilient PNT systems, logistics and system integration.
From an operational perspective, discussions will cover advances in military GPS applications, the strengths and weaknesses of field navigation devices, warfighter PNT requirements and solutions, and navigation warfare.
JNC 2027 will combine its conference program with an exhibition for organizations working across military and government navigation. The exhibition provides a setting for companies and organizations to present technologies and capabilities to attendees from the military, government, commercial sector and academia.
The exhibit hall will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on June 8 and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on June 9.
JNC 2027 will mark the 50th conference in a history that traces back to 1966, when the Aerospace, Guidance, and Metrology Center (AGMC) at Newark Air Force Station began holding forums for the exchange of information on the maintenance, reliability and improvement of guidance and navigation systems.
In 1969, following approval from the Joint Material Commanders Secretariat, the Joint Services Data Exchange (JSDE) for Inertial Systems was established. Its purpose was to continue the cooperative exchange of information concerning the design, development, operation and maintenance of inertial guidance and navigation systems.
Following a planning meeting in May 1969, the first JSDE-organized conference took place in October 1969 at the AGMC in Newark, Ohio. Brig. Gen. R. E. Hails of the AGMC delivered the opening address.
During 1970 and 1971, membership expanded to include representatives from the defense industry and commercial airlines. Interest also grew across the Department of Defense, with participation involving organizations from the Air Force, Navy and Army, as well as NASA and NATO.
The AGMC served as permanent secretary for the group, which included representation from the Air Force, Army, Navy, airlines, Defense Supply Agency and Charles Stark Draper Laboratory. Representatives met three months before each conference to review proposed papers and prepare the conference program.
In the late 1980s, the JSDE became a self-sufficient, tax-exempt organization managed by an executive committee with representatives from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Draper. Conferences were held every two years, with responsibility for organizing and chairing them rotating between the three military services.
The Department of Homeland Security was first represented in 2009, while representatives from Federally Funded Research and Development Centers have also participated over the years.
The first jointly sponsored JSDE/Institute of Navigation Joint Navigation Conference was held in 2009. Following that conference, the JSDE Board agreed to become the Institute of Navigation’s Military Division, and the JSDE organization was dissolved. The ION Military Division has hosted subsequent Joint Navigation Conferences.
The 2027 event continues the work that originated with the AGMC forums and the subsequent JSDE conferences, providing a forum for the exchange of technical information on guidance, navigation and PNT.
JNC 2027 will be held at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Kentucky, in the Greater Cincinnati area.
