The Ultra Compact Modem from Teledyne Benthos is a low-SWaP underwater acoustic communications unit designed for uncrewed vehicles and subsea instruments with strict size, weight, and power constraints. The OEM version measures only 60 × 50 mm and weighs 55 g, allowing integration aboard micro-UUVs and compact instrumentation packages. Increased transmit power supports greater acoustic range and link reliability, while reduced electrical demand benefits battery-limited vehicles and long-duration deployments.
The OEM package supports operation to 6,000 m, while the self-contained version is rated to 700 m. Janus compatibility provides support for standardized underwater acoustic communications. The UCM has also been integrated into on-demand fishing systems, using subsea acoustic communication to support remote recovery of fishing equipment without permanent surface lines or buoys.
