Independent drone advisors Drone Major have partnered with pioneering defense photonics firm olee.space to introduce a first-of-its-kind laser technology designed to revolutionize the UK’s counter-drone capabilities.
The new technology uses high-power fibre lasers to counter intruding drones, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional air defenses that cannot sustainably match the rapid proliferation of low-cost aerial threats. While traditional missile-based air defenses rely on munitions costing upwards of £150,000 each, this laser-based system neutralizes targets for less than £1 per intercept, maintaining a detection-to-neutralize time of under three seconds.
The deployment of this system addresses a growing operational challenge across Europe, where airports have faced increasing drone-related disruptions that lead to widespread flight cancellations, wasted resources, and severe safety risks. By combining multiple lasers into a single, highly focused beam traveling at the speed of light, the platform can engage targets at ranges extending up to 6 km.
Drone Major has acquired exclusive rights to integrate and sell the system, which was designed by olee.space, across the UK, US, and EU markets. This access is intended to enhance British counter-drone capabilities while developing domestic production capacity for systems vital to protecting Critical National Infrastructure. The technology is specifically suited for the protection of airports, the energy sector, armed forces, air forces, naval forces, border security agencies, and other critical infrastructure networks.
Engineered as a versatile “plug-and-play” technology, the system is designed to integrate with any tracking and detection infrastructure globally, including radar, electro-optical/infrared sensors, and multi-spectral systems. Because it is a non-kinetic system, it produces zero collateral damage, making it safe to operate near populated areas, fuel storage facilities, and sensitive electronics.
Before its introduction to the UK market, the technology underwent extensive field-testing by the Indian Armed Forces across desert, maritime, mountain, and tropical environments. It has also been validated in mobile configurations, including direct integration with existing infrastructure, uncrewed ground vehicles, ships, and helicopters.
Robert Garbett, Founder and Chief Executive of Drone Major, said, “This partnership will help to revolutionize British drone defense systems and fill a critical gap in combatting the threat posed by cheap drone swarms. olee.space’s cutting-edge counter-drone technology will ensure that the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure is safeguarded from drone intrusions, which have become increasingly common across the world.
“The UK is home to exceptional talent and a wealth of innovative technologies, and the new partnership will drive the development of a sophisticated British drone and counter-drone industry, able to independently manufacture high-tech systems within the country.”
James Soloman, Co-Founder of olee.space, added, “Access to this first-of-its-kind anti-drone system will place the UK at the forefront of the global drone industry, delivering a reliable and cost-effective solution to trespasses by low-cost drones.
“Our partnership with Drone Major will empower British SMEs and startups, allowing them to develop their own production capabilities and strengthen the UK’s supply chain resilience.”
