South Korean defense specialist UI Helicopter has entered a strategic partnership with German drone manufacturer AVILUS to accelerate the development of multi-purpose unmanned platforms and autonomous medical evacuation systems.
The collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed at UI Helicopter’s Seoul headquarters by CEO Sung-Wieh Rim and AVILUS CEO Niclas Bähr. This agreement marks a pivot for UI Helicopter as it transitions from a focus on maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) toward high-tech proprietary manufacturing.
The partnership serves as a central element of the company’s “integrated unmanned solution” strategy. By pairing this project with an existing drone-based radiation detection system, the company intends to provide a full range of capabilities for hazardous operations, including reconnaissance in contaminated zones and the remote transport of wounded personnel.
AVILUS provides expertise in vertical flight technology and maintains a portfolio of systems already validated through operational deployments in German Armed Forces exercises. This proven technical background is expected to assist UI Helicopter in addressing the evolving requirements of modern warfare, where unmanned evacuation systems are increasingly prioritized to eliminate risks to flight crews during rescue missions.
The alliance is positioned to address a global market for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) defense that is projected to grow by more than 8% annually. By combining vertical flight technology with established systems integration, the companies aim to capture market share both in South Korea and internationally.
Sung-Wieh Rim, UI Helicopter CEO, stated, “Our collaboration with AVILUS will be the catalyst that elevates our unmanned systems to a global standard. Leveraging our 40 years of expertise in aviation MRO and systems integration, we are transforming into a proprietary manufacturer and exporter of unmanned platforms.”
Niclas Bähr, CEO of AVILUS, added, “We are thrilled to work with UI Helicopter, a key player in the Korean aviation industry. The synergy between our drone technology and their systems integration capabilities will create a powerful presence in Asia and the globalmarket.”
