Nokia Solutions and Networks OY has obtained the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Design Verification Report (DVR) for its LTE/5G Drone System, supporting M2 risk mitigation with a High Level of Robustness (M2 High) and enhanced containment.
The DVR confirms the system’s performance in ground risk reduction and containment, and defines the operational conditions required to achieve M2 High and enhanced containment within a Specific Assurance and Integrity Level (SAIL) II environment. The verification was conducted according to the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) methodology outlined in Regulation (EU) 2019/947.
This milestone marks Nokia’s first Design Verification engagement with EASA, and the company is the first applicant to receive EASA’s no technical objection for M2 High mitigations for a drone in the relevant weight category. The process required exploring new technical domains and means of compliance.
The DVR enables Nokia and other operators to seek operational authorization from their national authorities for their specific Concepts of Operations (ConOps). Nokia’s primary ConOps for its Nokia Drone Networks solution focuses on industrial inspection activities, among other applications. This milestone demonstrates how aviation-grade safety and cellular connectivity can work together to support safe, scalable Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations across Europe.
