AVT Australia Micro Gimbal

AVT Australia have announced that they are ready for flight demonstrations to the Australian Defence Force of their Micro Gimbal. The Defence Innovation Hub’s Micro Gimbal contract, for a Micro Gimbal to support the Australian Army, was awarded to AVT Australia in 2018. In order to produce the worlds-best technology performance levels, the contract set out the following milestones in order to collate valuable information and insight into the Micro Gimbal’s progression: a detailed design review, a test readiness review and a technology demonstration.

The Micro Gimbal which weighs just 220g and measures 102mm in height by 70mm in diameter, has completed all of these milestones and is now ready for demonstrations in a flight environment. Designed to offer superior ISR, target acquisition and force protection, the system is fully stabilised with two-axis rotation and incorporates:

  • EO ultra-zoom sensor
  • Custom thermal core
  • Advanced onboard video processing

Optimised for integration into a sub 2kg small unmanned aerial system (sUAS), the Micro Gimbal has been developed at AVT Australia’s R&D facility in Melbourne. Speaking about the project Chief Technology Officer at AVT Australia, Thomas Loveard said;

“We look forward to demonstrating the system in a flight environment to the ADF. We are committed to developing the world’s best Micro Gimbal system for future consideration of the Australian Army, which could provide a significant capability edge in a future battlefield environment.”
