The Phantom 2 Vision+ Quadcopter features Vicon’s T40S Motion Capture System

OMG plc, the technology group providing image capture products for the entertainment, defence, life science and engineering industries, announces its Vicon division has secured a contract with DJI.

DJI Innovations, established in 2006, is the global leader in developing and manufacturing high performance, reliable, easy-to-use, small, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) for commercial and recreational use. The company of over 2000 employees, among the largest in the UAS market, is dedicated to making aerial photography and videography accessible to professional photographers, cinematographers and hobbyists.

Known as a ‘flying camera’, the Phantom 2 Vision+ Quadcopter has a stabilised video camera and is controlled by the user on the ground via remote control. It is capable of capturing approximately 25 minutes of footage per flight and flying up to 700 meters in the air. The BBC recently reported one of their camera crew was using DJI’s S800 Hexcopter to capture world events from a completely different perspective.

DJI sought a motion capture system to help with their engine design, prototyping and flight systems research and development. DJI chose Vicon’s T40S system over other systems on the market as it can capture high-speed movement of the UAS outdoors and deliver data with sub-millimetre precision.

“Our main aim is to guarantee the overall reliability and performance of DJI products. The Vicon system enables us to capture the movement of rotors at high speed, notice material deformation, and provides us with verifiable measurements we couldn’t record before,” said Gary ZHOU, Engineer, DJI.

Imogen Moorhouse, CEO of Vicon, commented: “DJI is a great new client for Vicon. Being able to capture the UAS outdoors with unparalleled precision is what DJI need to meet their high stability and safety standards and is also testament to the strength of Vicon technology. DJI have a unique application we’re excited to be a part of and we look forward to working together to further develop their product range.”
