Push-pull connectors require only axial force to disconnect a plug from a socket, with no rotational force required. To prevent accidental disconnects, push-pull connectors incorporate a locking mechanism that can only be disengaged by squeezing the body or by pulling back on the outer sleeve. Engaging the locking mechanism requires only a straightforward insertion of the plug into the receptacle. This highly secure yet quick-to-operate interconnect mechanism is ideal for mission-critical UAVs and unmanned systems.
Circular Push Pull Connectors
The majority of push-pull connectors are circular, although some square and rectangular designs exist. Circular connectors allow efficient and compact arrangement of pins, providing a space-saving advantage for SWaP-conscious applications. Push pull connectors may be uniquely keyed to avoid cross-mating, as well as to prevent mating in an incorrect orientation.
Push Pull Connector Materials and Engineering
The bodies of push-pull connectors may be made of plastic, or metal for added durability and EMI protection. Metalized composite connector shells are also available, providing a lighter but robust option that will help reduce overall weight.
Mil-spec Push Pull Connectors
Rugged push-pull connectors for military and harsh environment usage are engineered to withstand thousands of mating cycles, and may be IP-rated (IP64, IP67, IP68, IP69K) to protect against dust and water ingress to various levels.
Drone & UAV SWaP Applications
Push-pull connectors can transfer power, data, signal and fiber optics, with the ability to enclose multiple contact types and transmit a range of voltages within a single connector. This allows designers to minimise the number of separate connectors and cables, simplifying systems and saving space and weight.
