The MQ-9B SkyGuardian® is a next-generation Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) designed for persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and multi-mission flexibility.

Developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), it features 40+ hours of endurance, advanced ISR sensors, and full compliance with NATO and civil airspace regulations (STANAG 4671), making it the first RPAS in its class to seamlessly integrate into controlled airspace.

MQ-9B SkyGuardian Overview

The MQ-9B SkyGuardian represents a major leap in unmanned aircraft technology, providing long-endurance, multi-domain ISR for military and civil operations. It is the first type-certifiable RPAS designed to meet NATO standards (STANAG 4671) and to comply with civil airspace requirements in the U.S. and around the world, enabling safe integration into controlled airspace.

Derived from a family of systems with over 8 million flight hours, SkyGuardian is designed for beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) operations via SATCOM, allowing remote operation from anywhere in the world.

SkyGuardian is optimized for multi-role operations, including ISR, electronic warfare (EW), search and rescue (SAR), and maritime operations. It features nine external hardpoints, supporting modular payloads such as radars and sensors, making it highly versatile for a range of mission configurations.

MQ-9B SkyGuardian Key Features and Capabilities

SkyGuardian is designed for maximum flexibility, enabling both military and civilian authorities to conduct operations in all types of weather and operational conditions.

Unmatched ISR & Multi-Domain Capabilities

Equipped with Lynx Multi-mode Radar and high-definition EO/IR sensors, SkyGuardian provides real-time intelligence gathering, target tracking, and reconnaissance. It can perform long-range over-the-horizon targeting, enabling strategic ISR missions for joint forces. The aircraft is also capable of airborne early warning (AEW) operations, enhancing situational awareness across multiple domains.

Flexible Mission Customization & Open Architecture

SkyGuardian features an open-architecture design, allowing operators to integrate sovereign payloads for tailored solutions. The aircraft is equipped with nine external hardpoints and supports multiple mission kits, including Tactical and Strategic SIGINT, Tactical Data Link (Link-16), Airborne Early Warning (AEW), and Communications Gateway/Relay. Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capabilities are available via the SeaGuardian® mission kit. This modularity allows armed forces and government agencies to customize the platform according to mission requirements.

Industry-Leading Endurance & Harsh Environment Operations

With an endurance of 40+ hours, SkyGuardian is capable of persistent surveillance over remote and hostile environments. It is all-weather capable, featuring an advanced anti-ice/de-ice system and lightning protection. This enables uninterrupted operation in extreme cold and adverse weather conditions.

Civil Airspace Compliance & Safe Integration

SkyGuardian is the first RPAS designed from the ground up to meet both NATO and international airworthiness standards. It features a Detect and Avoid System, incorporating Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), and Due Regard Radar, allowing it to fly safely alongside commercial aircraft.

GA-ASI has worked closely with the FAA and UK Civil Aviation Authority to develop airspace integration procedures, ensuring SkyGuardian can operate safely in both military and civilian environments.

Mission Roles

The MQ-9B SkyGuardian is designed for a wide range of mission sets across multiple domains.

Military and Homeland Security Applications

SkyGuardian plays a critical role in ISR, airborne early warning, and battlefield coordination, supporting missions such as:

  • Long-range ISR & Over-the-Horizon Targeting
  • Airborne Early Warning (AEW)
  • Electronic Warfare (EW)
  • Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW) & Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) (via SeaGuardian mission kit)
  • Airborne Mine Countermeasures (AMCM) (via SeaGuardian mission kit)

Civilian & Multi-Agency Operations

Beyond military applications, SkyGuardian is ideal for civilian and humanitarian operations. It supports:

  • Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief
  • Search and Rescue (SAR) Operations
  • Law Enforcement & Border Surveillance
  • Environmental Monitoring

Arctic Security & High-Latitude Operations

SkyGuardian is uniquely suited for high-latitude ISR, ensuring Arctic security through:

  • Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity for continuous Arctic operations
  • Proven endurance in extreme cold, including anti-ice/de-ice protection
  • Successful RPAS missions beyond the 78th parallel north, demonstrating polar access

Maritime Variant: MQ-9B SeaGuardian®

The MQ-9B SeaGuardian is a specialized version of SkyGuardian, optimized for maritime domain awareness, surveillance, and anti-submarine warfare.

SeaGuardian features a multi-mode 360° maritime radar, Automatic Identification System (AIS) for ship tracking, and Electronic Support Measures (ESM) for electronic threat detection. It is the first RPAS to provide real-time ISR coverage of both surface and subsurface threats. The platform’s bolt-on ASW mission kit enables deployment of sonobuoys for anti-submarine tracking, enhancing naval and coast guard operations.

Protector RG Mk1: The UK’s MQ-9B Variant

The Royal Air Force’s (RAF) Protector RG Mk1 is the first SkyGuardian-based RPAS designed for military service. It is built to meet the UK’s DEFSTAN 00-970 and NATO STANAG 4671 airworthiness standards, ensuring safe operation in UK and NATO-controlled airspace.

Protector integrates enhanced ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance) capabilities and is interoperable with UK joint forces and allied NATO networks.
