Sagetech has released a tech brief that discusses the current and future Mode 5 Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) transponder requirements for UAS, and also provides technical considerations for engineers when creating a system for Identify Friend or Foe applications.

Traditionally-sized Mode 5 IFF transponders are used in manned aircraft, however smaller UAV airframes (down to class 2) present integration challenges and so new solutions are required for a successful Mode 5 IFF transponder implementation.

In this article, Sagetech highlight a number of basic requirements that should be considered, including: size and weight, power output, ADS-B In and Out, and certifications.
