Sagetech Avionics and MatrixSpace have joined forces to accelerate the development of Detect and Avoid (DAA) technologies that enhance the safety and scalability of Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS).
This collaboration brings together Sagetech’s expertise in certifiable avionics with MatrixSpace’s AI-driven radar sensing, delivering integrated situational awareness solutions tailored for both defense and commercial applications.
Sagetech Avionics, a leading provider of situational awareness solutions for both crewed and uncrewed platforms, develops certifiable technologies that support military, public safety, and commercial missions. MatrixSpace complements this with compact, AI-enhanced radar systems that deliver immediate and highly accurate object detection, enabling intelligent and scalable UAS deployments. Together, the two companies are positioned to enhance operational safety and capability across a broad range of use cases.
Rudy Johnson, Director Business Development at Sagetech Avionics, said, “Our mission is to deliver low-SWaP certified avionics solutions that enable safe, scalable airspace integration. To achieve this requires a sophisticated level of airspace awareness informed by high-performance sensors. MatrixSpace is meeting the challenge, setting new standards in precision detection, making them key to meeting our customers’ demanding requirements.”
Lori DeMatteis, Chief Revenue Officer at MatrixSpace, added, “As autonomous aviation becomes ubiquitous, the need to integrate it safely into the National Airspace is key. Working with Sagetech Avionics has demonstrated their commitment not only to high customer standards but also reaching for the most advanced, innovative solutions possible to achieve this.”
The partnership recently earned recognition through an HSWERX award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), highlighting their collaborative work on air domain awareness for uncrewed systems. The project, aimed at improving small UAS (sUAS) detection in support of DHS missions, particularly within Customs and Border Protection (CBP), focused on identifying Group III and smaller UAS equipped with onboard sensors that meet FAA requirements for BVLOS operations. The ability to fly safely beyond visual range is critical for missions that involve persistent surveillance over expansive and often remote environments such as national borders and key infrastructure.
MatrixSpace’s lightweight radar and Sagetech’s onboard ACAS-based DAA computer were selected for their ability to deliver real-time detection and collision avoidance within a compact, SWaP-optimized footprint. This integration supports FAA-aligned compliance while enabling rapid decision-making and autonomy at the edge, an essential capability for scalable, safe UAS operations in the National Airspace System.
MatrixSpace’s AI-powered sensor suite combines radar, edge computing, and object classification to deliver impressive situational awareness for air and ground-based applications. These systems enhance security, improve mission responsiveness, and support detailed compliance reporting, enabling operators to rapidly respond to dynamic threats in any outdoor environment.
