WOLF Advanced Technology outlines how changing defense priorities across Europe are increasing the need for compact, rugged embedded computing systems capable of supporting AI, video, networking, and sensor processing at the tactical edge.
Across Europe, defense modernization is becoming more urgent, with greater emphasis on deployment speed, operational readiness, and technological independence. Governments are increasing defense spending while investing in AI, autonomous systems, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), drone technology, and next-generation battlefield technologies.
These priorities are placing greater demands on embedded computing. Modern defense platforms must process increasing volumes of data, respond quickly, and operate within constrained environments, including unmanned systems, tactical vehicles, and airborne platforms.
Processing at the Edge
Defense platforms generate large amounts of sensor and video data, but transmitting all of it to centralized infrastructure is often impractical.
Latency, bandwidth limitations, contested communications environments, and operational security concerns are driving more processing toward the edge. Embedded systems therefore need to support real-time AI inference and sensor processing directly on-platform, along with low-latency video and ISR processing.
These capabilities must also be delivered within strict SWaP-C constraints while using ruggedized systems suitable for aerospace and defense environments.
Smaller, More Modular Systems
European defense programs are also moving toward more modular and open architectures.
Standards such as VPX and SOSA are becoming increasingly important because they support faster integration, easier scaling, and reduced long-term integration risk.
For applications where traditional VPX systems may be impractical, VNX+ provides a smaller form factor for high-performance embedded computing. The standard enables AI processing, video, networking, and sensor capabilities to be integrated into autonomous systems, tactical vehicles, airborne platforms, and other SWaP-C-constrained applications.
WOLF’s VNX+ System
At Eurosatory 2026, WOLF demonstrated a compact, deployment-ready single-slot VNX+ system designed to bring advanced AI capabilities to the tactical edge.
The rugged system combines WOLF’s NX-powered Single-Board Computer (SBC) module with onboard power conversion in a streamlined chassis intended for space-constrained aerospace and defense applications.
The demonstration highlighted AI inference, machine vision, real-time video processing, and sensor analytics performed directly at the edge. The system also incorporates a 1 TB Self-Encrypting NVMe Drive (SED), providing hardware-level data protection for mission-critical applications.
VNX+ builds on the VITA 74 VNX specification and extends small-form-factor embedded computing through support for higher power delivery and advanced connector technologies. This allows more sophisticated workloads to be supported while maintaining the compact footprint required by modern aerospace and defense platforms.
As European defense requirements continue to evolve, WOLF is focused on modular edge computing solutions designed to support advanced processing, optimize SWaP-C, and help customers accelerate integration across constrained aerospace and defense platforms.
