Videosoft Global, a developer of low bandwidth video streaming technology for unmanned and robotic systems, discusses the challenges and solutions for delivering reliable live video in Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations.
Streaming real-time video from an aircraft to the ground or beyond over long distances is one of the main challenges in BVLOS operations. Low-bandwidth network conditions, whether satellite, long-range RF, or unpredictable cellular coverage, make transmitting high-quality, live feeds difficult.
Achieving high-quality content over very low bitrates requires specialist software. Videosoft focuses on getting usable, reliable video across these low-bitrate links, a key obstacle in BVLOS missions.
Most companies rely on standard video tools and off-the-shelf protocols, which may work in lab conditions but often fail in real-world deployments where limited bandwidth and latency constraints exist.
Videosoft takes a different approach, designing its own protocols, using optimized encoding methods, and enhancing the entire system for low-bitrate environments. This allows the company to deliver reliable, high-performance video in challenging network conditions where other solutions fall short.
Proven SATCOM Performance
Videosoft recently demonstrated real-time video streaming over Satellite Communication (SATCOM) from a AIR6 drone flying in Klagenfurt, Austria, with very low latency and full joystick control.
The remote flight was operated from Barcelona, more than 1,500 km away, with live video streamed directly to the BCN Drone Center.
The exercise showcased a real-world, long-distance remote operation, with video streamed at less than 200 kbps. The system is also capable of operating at data rates as low as 1 kbps while still delivering images suitable for operational use
Partnership Opportunities Across the Ecosystem
Videosoft’s solutions are relevant across the entire BVLOS ecosystem. End users benefit from more reliable service, airframe manufacturers can integrate superior onboard video streaming, and service providers can offer higher-quality products. Communications hardware manufacturers, such as its partner Gotonomi, can also embed Videosoft directly into L-band SATCOM modems.
The company is actively seeking partnerships with anyone looking to improve the quality and reliability of video transmission in BVLOS applications.
