Volatus Aerospace has appointed Lieutenant-General (Ret’d) Christopher J. Coates to its Board of Advisors to strengthen the company’s defense expertise and support for the Canadian Armed Forces.
The appointment comes as the company focuses on domestic manufacturing of Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS), training, and operational capabilities for allied defense partners. Lieutenant-General Coates previously served as the Commander of Canadian Joint Operations Command (CJOC), where he oversaw all domestic and global operations for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Special Operations Forces. He also served as Deputy Commander of NORAD, leading North American air defense in partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense.
Following a career as a helicopter pilot and tactical aviation commander, Coates held senior roles at CAE focusing on synthetic environments and has advised on defense modernization in the Middle East. He currently heads the Foreign Policy, National Defence, and National Security Program at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute.
The Volatus Advisory Board provides strategic guidance on defense procurement, government policy, and emerging capability requirements. The board acts in a consultative capacity to build relationships with military and industry stakeholders while supporting the company’s long-term direction.
