Making the Business Case for Maritime Innovation: The Legal Framework and View from the CEO
11:00 AM – 11:45 AM ET
The marine environment is immense and inherently dangerous. Now, the maritime sector is undergoing an evolution with AI-enhanced technology into both commercial and defense operations aboard surface vessels, vehicles, systems, and within the maritime transportation system infrastructure. Innovation sits at the core of industrial and military competitiveness and the introduction of advanced autonomy in the maritime sector is a key element for economic growth and military readiness and strategies. Modernizing the marine industry is a sea change that may offer more sustainable solutions related to economics, environmental impact, and societal benefits, although it brings a new set of challenges as innovation will affect design, operations, safety, security, training, and the workforce under existing regulations. This session will explore the business cases for introducing unmanned, optionally manned, or AI-enhanced system technologies into maritime commercial and military operations and why “experience matters”, including a discussion on the key legal and regulatory considerations in the maritime space. This legal overview will be combined with a technical discussion from a developer in next generation solutions, SailPlan, which provides a platform for intelligent ship navigation to maximize profitability while increasing safety through real-time data and predictive analytics in voyage planning, real-time monitoring, long-range collision avoidance.
