Multibeam Echosounder Integrated into SB 100 PRO USV for Bathymetric Study in a BreakwaterSEABOTS’ activity revolves around the development of technologies for exploring and preserving the marine environment, such as unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), and buoys.

Naval robotics can replace tasks that have always been carried out by traditional methods, which have a high ecological impact and expensive operating costs. USVs are becoming widespread in several areas in the naval sector. In this case study, SEABOTS presents a need that is shared by many ports, mooring inspection in harbors and marinas.

The case study focuses on the deployment of the USV SB 100 PRO, equipped with a WASSP S3R multibeam echosounder, in Sant Feliu de GuĂxols to conduct a bathymetric study in a breakwater.

The main objective of these works has been to determine the remaining submerged structure after the destruction of the breakwater, promenade and balcony. We have the support of the construction company ENCO, which will carry out all the works of restoration of the breakwater, with more than 35 years of experience in the maritime sector.

By taking advantage of operating a USV with low draft (15cm) it has been possible to navigate and collect data immediately close to the breakwater rocks, which would not be possible with a traditional vessel.

RTK corrections for centimeter-accurate positioning suitable for multibeam echosounder work have been obtained by connecting to the National Geographic Institute’s Real Time Positioning Network caster with NTRIP.

The case study covers:

  • Data acquired
  • Operation
  • Results

The multi purpose USV SB 100 PRO equipped with a WASSP S3R multibeam echosounder offers an unbeatable performance. A complete pack with all the necessary instruments to perform entire works while increasing potential applications in several marine sectors. It can carry out control and monitoring of dock constructions, multibeam bathymetry, draught control, dredging, volume calculation, inspection of structures and location of submerged artifacts. The inclusion of the INS SBG Ellipse Dual Antenna and SVS Valeport ensure accuracy and quality of data.
