WXYZ-TV and ResilienX are launching a pilot project in metro Detroit to evaluate the ORION-X platform for on-demand aerial newsgathering.
The collaboration aims to test the operational and editorial value of integrating remotely managed aerial video into standard newsroom workflows. Supported by Michigan Central’s Advanced Aerial Innovation Region, the project will allow WXYZ, an ABC-affiliated station owned by The E.W. Scripps Company, to request missions for both live and recorded content. The pilot is designed to prioritize routine footage, such as sunrise “bump shots” and coverage of planned community events like festivals and parades, while also exploring limited breaking-news applications where safety and regulations permit.
Under the agreement, ResilienX is responsible for the technology, regulatory compliance, and flight operations. This managed service model allows the news station to focus on editorial needs while the flight team handles the logistics of planning and safety.
Andrew Carter, ResilienX CEO, said, “This collaboration lets us test a newsroom-ready service model with a focus on safety, compliance, and repeatable operations. With ORION-X, stations receive timely aerial perspectives inside the tools they already use, while our team manages planning, regulatory alignment, and flight operations.”
WXYZ will use the platform to submit editorial requests and integrate the resulting footage into their broadcasts at their discretion. The station will also provide feedback on the utility and quality of the video to help refine how the technology fits into a fast-paced news environment.
Mike Murri, WXYZ Regional Vice President and General Manager, added, “We are always looking for safe, responsible ways to add meaningful perspectives to our storytelling in Detroit. This collaboration with ResilienX represents an opportunity to explore how emerging aerial technology can enhance local news coverage – connecting neighbors with one another – while maintaining our commitment to journalistic standards and community trust.”
The pilot operations are scheduled to begin in early 2026. Initial phases will focus on site selection and detailed operational planning within Detroit’s innovation district to ensure all flights meet privacy standards and applicable laws.
