Ascent AeroSystems’ Spirit™ coaxial UAV platform has joined the Defense Innovation Unit’s (DIU) Blue UAS Framework as a cleared component, identifying this unmanned technology as a compliant component that accelerates secure, scalable system design.
This achievement builds on Spirit’s existing status on the Blue UAS Cleared List, a designation that provides U.S. government users with immediate access to vetted sUAS platforms as a complete system, making Spirit the only airframe recognized on both DIU’s evaluated and approved lists.
Spirit has a compact coaxial footprint, modular click-ring payload interface, rugged aircraft-grade construction, and open architecture. This provides integrators and operators with the building blocks to develop and deploy future-proof, NDAA-compliant systems that can evolve with mission requirements.
This aligns with the priorities of the Department of Defense (DoD), with Spirit’s open system architecture and modular design embodying DIU’s call for scalable, interoperable systems that can adapt to evolving mission needs and regulatory requirements.
As a Blue-approved component, Spirit offers integration flexibility, enabling mission integrators to design and deploy compliant, custom-configured UAV solutions without redundant vetting or complex acquisition processes.
Federal agencies and DoD units can purchase Spirit directly under Blue UAS guidelines, either as a complete system or as part of a larger architecture, enabling streamlined acquisition.
Peter Fuchs, Cofounder and CEO of Ascent AeroSystems, stated, “The Spirit is now the only UAV approved by DIU as both a complete system and as a component. This distinction demonstrates not only the reliability of the aircraft as delivered, but also how its architecture reflects the Department of Defense’s emphasis on modular, open systems that can evolve with mission requirements.”
Spirit’s dual status highlights its important position within the U.S. drone ecosystem. It empowers operators to assemble complete, proven systems, as well as give integrators a foundation to innovate and develop the advanced unmanned solutions.
The dual recognition also reflects DIU and the DoD’s emphasis on open-architecture scalability, a core principle embedded in Spirit’s design from the outset.
Fuchs added, “This could be the most significant change to the Blue program yet. As Congress advances the national strategy for Drone Dominance, operators need platforms that are not only innovative, but also proven, compliant, and ready for scale. Ascent is delivering those capabilities today – and ensuring our customers are positioned to lead the next chapter of U.S. drone adoption.”
