General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has revealed the official designation of its Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) as the YFQ-42A, a pivotal step in the development of the U.S. Air Force’s (USAF) next-generation uncrewed jet fighter.

This announcement follows the Air Force’s decision in 2024 to select GA-ASI for the development and construction of the YFQ-42A. The aircraft’s designation marks the beginning of a new era for unmanned fighter aircraft, setting the stage for enhanced air dominance through advanced autonomous capabilities.

GA-ASI President David R. Alexander said, “We’re proud to get a new official aircraft designation. YFQ-42A continues a long and distinguished history for GA-ASI that dates back to the 1990s and the debut of the RQ-1 Predator®, which later changed to MQ-1 Predator. That uncrewed aircraft gave way to the MQ-9A Reaper®, the MQ-20 Avenger®, our new MQ-9B SkyGuardian® and SeaGuardian®, and many others.

“These aircraft represent an unrivaled history of capable, dependable uncrewed platforms that meet the needs of America’s warfighters and point the way to a significant new era for airpower.”

The YFQ-42A, now officially named, will serve as the prototype for the Air Force’s evolving Mission Design Series (MDS), becoming a cornerstone in the military’s strategy to secure air superiority in future conflicts. Designed to operate in contested environments, this semi-autonomous aircraft will collaborate seamlessly with both current and next-generation crewed aircraft, forming a critical component of the Joint Force’s air combat capabilities. Its flexible, affordable design will make it a powerful force multiplier, capable of delivering enhanced mission effectiveness while maintaining cost efficiency.

The YFQ-42A’s significance goes beyond its role in air superiority—it will also play an essential part in the Air Force’s broader strategy to integrate autonomous collaborative platforms into its operations. These platforms are intended to boost the effectiveness of manned-unmanned teaming, expanding mission capabilities and enhancing the force’s ability to neutralize enemy threats. With its lower cost and threat-relevant timeline, the YFQ-42A represents an efficient solution for maintaining air dominance through affordable mass deployment.

The YFQ-42A designation follows the Air Force’s earlier decision to designate GA-ASI’s XQ-67A Off-Board Sensing Station, a predecessor aircraft. The XQ-67A was developed under the guidance of the Air Force Research Lab to advance the concepts necessary for the implementation of CCA capabilities.

Within the Air Force’s designation system, the “X” prefix refers to test and experimental aircraft, while “Y” marks production-representative aircraft in early stages, typically ahead of a formal program. The “F” stands for fighter, and the “Q” signifies an uncrewed aircraft. As the YFQ-42A transitions to full production, the “Y” designation will be dropped, signaling its readiness for operational deployment.

With the YFQ-42A leading the way, the future of autonomous fighter jets looks promising, offering new capabilities that could revolutionize air combat strategies and reshape the landscape of modern warfare.
