Amazon’s Prime Air drone delivery service is set to launch in the UK, with initial flights planned from its fulfilment center in Darlington.

The company is aiming to expand its autonomous delivery network beyond existing locations.

In 2023, Amazon outlined its intentions to introduce drone deliveries in Britain. Having successfully deployed this technology in select regions worldwide, the company is now focusing on gaining the necessary approvals and establishing operations in the UK.

The next phase involves submitting a planning proposal to local authorities for the construction of flight operation infrastructure at the Darlington site. Additionally, Amazon will seek regulatory clearance from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to operate drones within British airspace. Once these authorizations are secured, recruitment will begin for personnel to support the program’s launch.

Collaboration with the CAA remains a priority, ensuring that evolving regulations align with the safe and efficient rollout of commercial drone services. As part of this process, Amazon plans to engage with the Darlington community, addressing inquiries and gathering insights to refine its approach before services commence.

When operational, eligible customers will be able to order select products via Amazon’s app or website, with deliveries arriving within an hour. Since its initial U.S. deployment in 2022, Prime Air has successfully transported thousands of parcels using its custom-designed, electrically powered drones.
