RE2, Inc. has partnered with iRobot by serving as the supplier and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of the Small Lightweight Manipulator (SLM) for the iRobot 110 FirstLook® Robot.

The FirstLook is a compact, rugged and multi-mission lightweight robot that provides immediate situational awareness, performs persistent observation, and investigates dangerous and hazardous materials while keeping the operator out of harm’s way.

The SLM, a mission-enhancing and modular payload developed and manufactured by RE2, enables the FirstLook operator to easily manipulate and interact with the environment. The SLM is a strong yet lightweight manipulator that can quickly and easily be mounted onto the FirstLook robot. The robotic arm also includes a mast camera which provides operators with a better vantage point for navigating and inspecting.

“FirstLook equipped with the SLM provides hands and eyes-on control for operators in any situation,” stated Mark Belanger, director of US Government programs for iRobot. “By partnering with RE2, we are able to provide our customers with a modular, lightweight, and reliable manipulator arm that expands the types of missions that operators can perform using our rugged and battle-proven system.”

“As a leading developer of robotic manipulator arms, RE2 is honored to be the supplier of the SLM to iRobot,” stated Jorgen Pedersen, RE2 president and CEO. “This technology enables iRobot’s FirstLook customers to physically interact with the world.”

Pedersen continued, “The entire system weighs less than ten pounds and is easily man-transportable for dismounted EOD, infantry and special operations missions. Integrating the SLM onto the FirstLook provides a complete dismounted solution.”
