FT Technologies is a specialist designer and manufacturer of combat-rugged ultrasonic wind sensors for military and defense applications. Our compact and lightweight wind anemometers provide high-reliability wind speed and direction data and have been deployed around the world in the harshest of environments.
Our Acoustic Resonance wind sensors have been selected by a range of leading companies in the defense and aerospace sectors for mission-critical projects, including Lockheed Martin, Leonardo and Thales.
Rugged Wind Measurement Sensors
Built for Extreme Environments
Our combat-proven wind speed and direction measurement units are specifically engineered to deliver high accuracy even in extremes of weather and temperature. Built to MIL-STD-810 specifications, they can withstand severe shock and vibration and are tested up to 60G.
The completely waterproof sensors have been designed with a hard anodised aluminium enclosure that is highly resistant to corrosion, sand, dust and electromagnetic interference. With no moving parts, they require no maintenance or re-calibration, and produce low enough emissions to have no effect on neighbouring sensors.
FT meteorological sensors also feature a thermostatically-controlled heating system that can maintain temperature at a user-specified set point between 0° and 50°C. The aluminium construction ensures that heat is evenly distributed for effective ice prevention.
Acu-Res® Technology
All FT Technologies wind sensors are powered by our unique patented Acu-Res® technology. Acu-Res® utilizes an ultrasonic acoustic wave inside a resonant cavity, providing a signal-to-noise ratio that is more than 40dB stronger than other ultrasonic technologies.
This stronger and easier-to-measure signal results in more reliable data, and operation is also enhanced by automatic compensation for temperature, humidity and pressure to maintain maximal response. The powerful Acu-Res® software also monitors the quality of the data, continuously checks the health of the wind sensor’s sub-systems and dynamically controls the heater power to maintain ice-free operation.
Wind speed & direction measurement for military applications
The FT742 series of wind speed measurement units feature a lightweight rugged design with an IP66/67-sealed corrosion-resistant anodized aluminium, and can measure wind speeds of up to 75m/s. With typical data availability of more than 99.9%, the maintenance-free sensors will provide reliable long-term operation in even the most challenging of environments.
All wind anemometers include an integrated thermostatically-controlled de-icing system that makes it easy to keep the system heated even at low power. The FT742 family features a number of form factors including Direct Mount, Surface Mount and Pipe Mount, and all units are available in either analog or digital versions.
The FT205 is a compact wind speed, wind direction and air temperature measurement system specifically designed for installation on UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) and drones. Weighing just 100g (3.5oz) and constructed from a graphite and nylon composite, the low-SWaP sensor is ideal for flight control and environmental monitoring applications.
The ultrasonic sensor includes an integrated electronic compass for enhanced performance on moving platforms. It is resistant to electrical interference, operates at altitudes up to 4000m, and can withstand temperatures from -20°C to +70°C. The FT205 can be easily mounted on a pole or fixed to a flat surface on the aircraft.
