AUV Hydrogen-Powered Fuel Cell Module in Development

Cellula Robotics has been offered a contract extension to continue developing the hydrogen-powered fuel cell module for the Solus-LR Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). The original contract and extension were awarded by Defense Research and Development Canada (DRDC). 

The Solus-LR Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) is designed to perform long range, multi-month autonomous missions. The use of a novel suction anchor and fuel cell enables the Solus-LR to stay submerged for the entire mission. These technologies allow it to hold station at a surveillance location in a low-power state and increase the vehicle’s range through its high energy density respectively.

Through an investment of up to $133 million over five years, in the All Domain Situational Awareness (ADSA) Science and Technology (S&T) Program, Canada’s Department of National Defense is supporting a variety of innovative research and analysis projects, the outcomes of which are expected to contribute to the development of options for enhanced domain awareness of air, maritime surface and sub-surface approaches to Canada.

Developed under the ADSA S&T Program, fuel cell pool endurance tests of the Solus-LR will take place in early 2022.
